Posted on Fri ,20/11/2009 by FrawlzAs mentioned in my Micron Worklog… What follows is a brief recap on the open air box conversion for a Buell XB series bike. The open air box mod removes the factory plastic air box lid and replaces it with a small ‘lid’ which fits directly on the filter and allows much greater airflow around the element. More airflow = more neddies, more neddies = more lunatic grins and more frequent undie washing.
I bought my kit from SRW Moto. Peter, the bloke who runs the show is a fucken top notch bloke and really knows his shit. You could probably make the parts you see in the kit and the photo’s that follow but I couldn’t be fucked spending that much time arseing about with no guarantee of quality at the end. The kit has everything you need in it and comprehensive instructions. Even better, it has pictures on how to do it so you don’t have to read the instructions if, like me, that’s against your religious beliefs and shed manifesto.
My kit arrived looking just like this plus the instructions.
This kit is made to work with a catch can hence the t piece and extra hose. It is possible to install it without a catch can. Other things you may need before doing this mod include an exhaust servo emulator if you are using an after market exhaust. I fitted this mod before my micron arrived so I bodgied it up to work with the standard exhaust then tore that shit off and replaced it with the emulator when the micron arrived.
As well as the performance gains to be had from the extra air flow, this mod is a bling must for Buells with translucent air boxes. This is what is under the fancy shmancy see through plastic in stock form.
As you can see it’s a big black box which kinda negates the whole see through thing. (Yay, we can see through the tank at nothing.)
The airfilter is housed underneath all that.
Basically you rip this plastic base off and install the mounting bolts. The T piece pics up the breather pipes from each head and routes them into a catch can.
Or if you are a cheap bastard like me and didnt get the catch can, you can drill an extra hole in the base, connect both breather hoses into the T piece and route it back up inside the air filter.
Because I fitted this mod before I got my new exhaust, I had to find somewhere to mount the exhaust valve actuator.
To do this I cut some 1/2″ stand-offs from a piece of aluminium tube.
Fitted them on the servo like so.
Tested mounting position for clearance, marked up some holes and drilled them into the lid of the conversion kit.
I used self locking nuts and appropriate thread locking compound to ensure the bolts don’t fall off down into the throttle body and wreak total havoc.
